Long-Duration Energy Storage Technology Dominate the Energy Storage Market from 2030 to 2045?

A new study believes that long-duration energy storage will become more and more valuable as solar power becomes the dominant power supply in California.
California plans to eliminate carbon emissions from traditional fuel power plants by 2045, so it will accelerate the deployment of solar power generation and energy storage systems. These trends indicate that, compared with the currently installed lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, the power grid will benefit from long-term energy storage systems with longer continuous discharge times.
However, how many energy storage systems to deploy is a problem, because there is no track record of long-duration energy storage systems deployed recently, and the number of application cases of many potential energy storage technologies in the field of energy storage is relatively limited. Earlier this year, California regulators put forward the requirement to deploy nearly 1GW of long-duration energy storage systems by 2026.
However, a new analysis report of the California Energy Storage Alliance shows that California will need 9.8GW of energy storage deployments by 2030, with 973MW of that being long-duration. Then, between 2030 and 2045, a further 44.4GW of energy storage should be added to the grid to hit climate targets and maintain clean, reliable electricity. The research organization STRATEGEN has modeled the future development of California's power grid through a finer time granularity, and has made more detailed cost assumptions for emerging energy storage technologies that claim to be able to effectively store 5 hours, 10 hours and 100 hours of electricity.
Jin Noh, policy manager of the California Energy Storage Alliance, stated that since the demand for energy storage resources was so high that they must now start steadily purchasing to achieve the 2045 clean energy goal and the deployment of long-duration energy storage systems needed to be faster than they think.
