How to Prolong the Life of Switching Power Supply

In the research, development and design of new products of switching power adapters, engineers usually add some protection measures to design new products to avoid short circuits or component damage during the use of switching power adapters, so that the working life is related. In today's article, we'll share four safeguards that will allow the adapter to extend its lifespan of the adapter.
 
Method 1: Pulse power or overcurrent limit
 
In the process of new product research and development of switching power adapters, pulse-by-pulse over-power and over-current limitation is essential, and this kind of pulse-by-pulse over-power or over-current limitation is a very effective output overload in practical applications, which is often used in additional secondary current limiting protection. In previous switchgear, the input current was monitored in real time. If this current exceeds the specified limit current value, the turn-on pulse is terminated. In the discontinuous flyback converter, its maximum current determines the power of the circuit, and this type of protection circuit becomes a real power limiting protection circuit.
 
Method 2: Ultra-power delay shutdown protection
 
As a very effective output overload protection technology, the ultra-power delay shutdown protection technology has been widely used in domestic power adapter products. In a time-delay trip type system, the requirement to allow short transient currents is that the power is turned off only when the current stress exceeds a safe value for an extended period of time. Brief transient currents do not compromise the reliability of the power supply, nor do they have a large impact on the costs of the power supply. Only the long-term current requirements affect the costs and size of the circuit.
 
Method 3: Anti-IP Protection
 
The counterattack overpower protection method is currently widely used in the adapter research and development and manufacturers' production processes. This protection technology is an extension of the upper-speed form. There is a circuit to monitor the primary side current and secondary side voltage, reducing power as the output voltage decreases. In this way, when the load resistance drops, the output current is reduced to prevent the secondary side components from being damaged by excessive stress.
 
Method 4: Constant power limit protection
 
The constant input power limit protection method is one of the most commonly used switching power adapter output protection technologies in the world. The protection principle of this method is to protect the primary circuit by limiting the maximum transmission power. But in a flyback converter, this technique provides little protection for the secondary output components. For example, in a discontinuous flyback converter, the primary peak current is already limited, which gives a limited transfer power.
